What conflicts have you had because of your lifestyle? Have you had to make any gothy sacrifices for your career/job, or is your workplace very accepting of who you are? Is your job oriented around anything gothy? Finally, what sort of job would you possibly enjoy having that incorporates things you enjoy such as the gothic subculture?

Hallo all, I found this comm thru kat1031's journal.

I am Biker Goth; So I tend toward the 'Mad Max' Aesthetic over velvet, lace & silk.

I work in Collections and Customer Service.

Since I work mainly in a Call center environment, there's usually not a strict Dress Code.

However, The worst 'conflict' I've had was when I worked for the State. (CA) I worked in a call center, so there was no dress code, but a certain Cow-Irker had decided that my wardrobe was 'Intimidating'.

Now, I had worn a Black-on-Black wardrobe, complete with black nail polish since Day One.

That was not the problem.

The Problem was the fact that I wore a black leather jacket and heavy duty black boots to work every day.

The reason for this was that I rode a motorcycle to work every day.

So I had an actual practical reason for wearing black leathers on a daily basis.

But this stupid bint decided to make trouble for me and filed a complaint.

I wound up wasting an hour in the manager's office explaing the reason for my sartorial choices.

I had to explain that the Leathers were Armor in case I went down, and that I'd rather leave Cowhide on the road than my hide.

Fortunately, Her son rode a Harley so she understood. The F*&%ed part was that since the State was paranoid about being sued, they had to take *every* complaint seriously, now matter how stupid or trivial.

Right now, I am working in a place that subscribes to "Business Casual".

I'm pretty much stuck with Black pants, Black leather shoes and Black Shirts, but I MUST wear a shirt with a collar. I have yet to hear a reasonable explaination for that.

I would like to be able to wear my fatigues and boots , and not worry if I forgot to remove the nail polish, but it's not all bad.

I have mellowed in my old age to the point where I don't have to be Hard Core all the time. Besides, what's the point of wearing your GAF finery to work where 99% of your Cow-Irkers will not have the brain power to appreciate it anyway?
